‘What If…?’ director Bryan Andrews remembers Chadwick Boseman’s final act as T’Challa; reveals ‘none of us knew what he was going through’

Late Hollywood star and Oscar nominee Chadwick Boseman will make his final on-screen appearance in the upcoming Marvel Studios’ series, ‘What If…?’

The actor is set to reprise his role as T’Challa, but instead of playing the Black Panther a.k.a King of Wakanda, he will take on the role of Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy in his multiverse filled with incredible possibilities. Touted to change the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and explore major events through a different lens, the animated series will have the star voicing his character, one last time.

At the global press conference for the upcoming Disney+ series, director Bryan Andrews opened up about his fondest memories working with the late star, and also revealed a surprising detail about Boseman’s quiet battle with cancer.

Recalling their time working on the project, Andrews said, “It was amazing to work with him. We only got a small moment because the episode was so short. Everyone was able to enjoy his presence. I think that he was even one of the first actors to sign on for the voice cast. I remember we were all so excited because we wanted to work with Chadwick and we all loved ‘Black Panther’.”

Revealing that Boseman was among the first to join the voice cast, he went on to elaborate about their time spent at the recording studios.

“He is theatrically trained. Sometimes actors just want to hit the line and move on to the next one. But Chadwick wanted to do his part as a scene and build it up like a play. It was so much fun to do that because we got to read lines and do a performance with Chadwick Boseman,” the director added.

News of Chadwick’s sudden demise left fans, friends, film stars around the world in a state of shock. It was revealed in a social media post that the actor passed away, after a secret battle with colon cancer.

“None of us knew what he was going through at the time,” director Bryan revealed while going on to add, “Of course, he came and brought it on. He was excited to play this version of T’Challa because it was different and for him to play a King without a mantle. He was so excited to bring this new version of the character and give it to the audience.”

“We were blessed to have him in the show,” he concluded that left many holding back tears at the conference.

He also confessed that Chadwick’s demise added pressure to give their all to the anthology series. Bryan said, “In post-production, we were doing the score and he had already passed since then. We had to make sure that nothing went wrong with this episode because it was his last. So we tried to make sure we did everything to honour the character and Chadwick. Normal work meetings would turn emotional. It is still rough.”

‘What If…?’ is scheduled to premiere on August 11 with the first season consisting of 10 episodes.
