It was Akshay Kumar who decided Lara Dutta will play Indira Gandhi in ‘Bell Bottom’ | Hindi Movie News

Lara Dutta’s look as Indira Gandhi has become a talking point after the release of Akshay Kumar’s ‘Bell Bottom’ trailer. However, surprisingly, it wasn’t director Ranjeet M Tewari’s decision to cast Lara for the role. When asked about it, Tewari said, “It was Akshay Kumar sir who decided that Lara Dutta play the role of Indira Gandhi. Once Lara was locked for the role, we brought make-up expert Vikram Gaikwad onboard for the prosthetics. My brief to Vikram was straight–we can’t go halfway in recreating Mrs Gandhi; Lara had to look like her for the film we are going to make. And when I went to check the prosthetics I couldn’t recognise Lara”.

The filmmaker reveals that the actress did a lot of homework before she arrived on sets. Tewari said, “We got lots of BBC videos and other clips for Lara to see so she could get the body language and poise right in order to get into the skin of the character. Once she was on sets and her first take was done, she had managed to be pitch-perfect.”

In a recent chat with ETimes, make-up artist Vikram Gaikwad had revealed that Lara’s Indira Gandhi make-up used to take two-three trials every time before the shoot started. He had explained, “Indiraji has three prominent features – eyebrows, nose, and a face cut, along with a hairstyle. If you see, we have changed the shape and style of Lara’s eyebrows to make them look more dominant. We have done prosthetics on the nose. We made a nose that is similar to Indiraji’s and applied it to Lara. The wig was also worked out in fine detail to carry the texture, style, color, and combination of gray hair. Also, the wrinkles have been created with a lot of shading work.”

The story of ‘Bell Bottom’ revolves around an aircraft’s hijack and a covert mission to rescue passengers. The film also features Huma Qureshi and Vaani Kapoor in prominent roles.
